Most people talk the aramaic language, the language of Isa / Jesus (as) in Maalula. The inhabitants of Maalula are the natural descendants of those Semitic tribes which populated the Syrian desert and part of Mesopotamia 14 centuries ago.
When St. Tekla became Christian she broke her engagement to devote herself to God. Her fiancé did not like that, and tried to kill her. She survived each murder attempt, it is said, with a little divine intervention.
